What's different about multi-valve engines?

With the advent of overhead cam multi-valve engines has come a revolution in ignition lead design. No longer can these vehicles be serviced using older style leads. Spark plugs are now located deep within the engine and are usually surrounded by 4 valves per cylinder, incorporating 2 inlet valves and 2 exhaust valves (on some late model engines you will even find 5 valves per cylinder). These multi-valve systems are in turn either driven by single over head or double over head cam shafts. See the diagram below of a DOHC engine.

This means that spark plugs are no longer easily accessible and therefore ignition leads of the old design can no longer be pushed over the spark plug insulator by hand. To overcome this access problem engine manufacturers have designed tube assemblies that take the ignition lead deep down into the engine to contact the spark plug. These tube assemblies come in a great variety of sizes and shapes, from a few centimetres up to 30 centimetres in length. Top Gun carry over 100 different styles of tube assemblies in stock to cover the current range of engines available. Unfortunately because of varying engine designs, very few tube assemblies are interchangeable between models.
